Echo Loves Narcissus

by Crooked Man

The Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus involves a well-meaning, talkative nymph and a dim-witted, vain man. Though he keeps a notoriously low profile and is rarely seen in a club setting, you might be surprised to learn that Richard Barratt is neither of these things. The prolific Sheffield artist and producer (of Funky Worm, Sweet Exorcist, All Seeing I, and many more) makes a welcome return to DFA for his latest EP, Echo Loves Narcissus, a series of four fierce house stompers that take their upbeat sound far away from the tragic roots of their titles.

Lead single “Echo Loves Narcissus (Part 1)” was released anonymously as a vinyl A-side on microlabel Bitter End last August, but that didn’t stop the track from being named #1 single of the year by Piccadilly Records. The hype is still growing in 2018 – France’s Tsugi Magazine has named the song their single of the month for March, calling it an “irresistible disco-house banger” and drawing favorable comparisons to labelmate The Juan Maclean’s “Happy House.” And that’s just the first six minutes of this four part suite, each of the sections taking key melodic elements and constantly morphing them into something new. Echo Loves Narcissus is a tranquil house odyssey, more hit than myth.
